so the concept of expressing yourself through art>people losing their livelihood? Got it. His point was that nobody cried when all these people lost their jobs because of the new tool. Yet everyone is ready to boycott AI but not cars and everything else he mentioned. It’s hypocrisy.

i feel like we could use sports as a good analogy to help people understand. ai generating a football game is nothing, it completely ingores what people like about watching sports. its skill, its community, its real.

Comics are though unfortunately, not from the creator themselves but the publisher. Art is an expression, but when it comes to needing to release things on a deadline and or maximising profits, then Todd isn’t exactly incorrect

art has became something trying to maximize profit and efficiency. even before ai. poor conditions for workers, rushed scripts, etc:

the dvd and vhs examples falls apart when u put into perspective the fact that streaming is actually better than dvd and vhs when AI is 1000 times worse at doing art than actual artist this is no revolutionary tool its an insult to actual real art

We’ve been moving towards automated systems in media for a while now. In a lot of animated shows these days they use puppet rigs for animating characters which avoids having to redraw a character every frame. Automated lip syncing has been used in animation and video games for years. Digital colouring rather than hand coloured art. These are all processes that increase efficiency by having the creators do less and the computers do more.

From the perspective of a comic book company trying to make a profit in a capitalistic society it makes sense that they would want to utilize ai to efficiently create products. From the artists perspective ofc they want to create art that reflects who they are. If these artists want to sell the art they create then they’re welcome to do so and there are plenty of people that would be more willing to buy knowing that it isn’t just AI slop. That said it isn’t mandatory that large companies completely forgo using ai if they don’t want to. The idea of ai being stolen art is interesting because from a literal standpoint it’s true but in many cases(not sora ai) no individual can actually point out which artist or artists were “stolen” from to create the new ai art so it doesn’t mean much for any individual artist to make that claim. Also you could also argue that all artists take inspiration from other artists and often times mimic art styles from others. All that being said, im not particularly for the use of ai specifically for things like art that derive value from human expression itself but in terms of realism and practicality the only way you would get companies to not use ai in some way would be to prove that it is less efficient and less useful not that it isn’t human

He been more of a business owner than creative for too long. He thinking about efficiency under the pretext of making more products faster, all the while still collaborating with artists. He fails to realize that most other business owners couldn’t care less about said collaboration and care more about the profit incentive of multiplying production, making the barrier for entry for new artists like he was once pretty much impossible.
