I js hate that EVERYONE'S tying to be some weird esoteric nonchalant freak when Secretary was actually such an important movie for my mental health. Everyone wants to be a freak without thinking of the emotional side that comes with the dynamic.

YES!!!! This also fully circles back to “everyone is sexy but no one is erotic“ conversation that is going around. I honestly think we as a society are sooo disembodied because of phones/social media/the cosmetic surgery industry that any excitement or interest someone might feel towards deviance becomes consumed and almost commercialized instead of experienced and internalized. S*x is innately gross and messy and everyone is sanitizing it in the name of appearing perfect and keeping up the performance, even in intimate moments!!!

I definitely agree, it really pisses me off how cronenbergs more sexual films are just being watered down to “oh my goood i’m so freaky for watching thisss lolll” when films like videodrome and crash give beautiful commentary on how technology affects society’s sex and relationships. Videodrome on how media affects the relationships and the people within them, crash on how the evolution of technology effects those same concepts. I really think in people’s search to be more “unique” it waters down such a genuinely important message

Yes!! i’ve recently written an essay for my gender studies class about dis and how the “perverted-girl” epidemic represented on the tiktok algorithm is tied to neoliberal feminism and promotes hyper-individualism disguised as sexual positivity

performative perversion feels like people look at a “disturbing films” iceberg and think they’re crazy freaks because they watched a james spader and cronenberg film but refuse to watch actual arthouse porn or really just anything that is more deviant then the surface level films that always circulate around

i usually find straight non-subversive bdsm to be boring, but with secretary i think theres something to be said about how lee is the one in Actual control. that being said what tiktok has done to secretary makes me worry about the future of freak films

Your size up of Secretary being more about Lee’s psyche and less about the obvious kink element of her relationship with Mr. Grey is exactly why I really liked the movie! Great analysis here btw. You’re cooking!

I feel like pier paolo pasolini's films are also perverted as they arnt necessarily supposed to necessarily be "hot" to people but explaining the grimy or odd ways of life in a form of sexual behavior and insanity(removing salo out of the conversation), this is a very interesting video and very informative

On the topic of the fake pervert epidemic, the trend of people making edits to Frank Zappa’s I’m the Slime irritates me so bad because the song is about Television Propaganda, but people are twisting the line about perversion to be about (Insert random thing here). 95% of his music was raunchy stuff so why this song?? 😭

THANK YOUUUU I’m tired of ppl talking abt the piano teacher as ‘erotic’ or ‘arousing’ and putting it in the same realm with films that r when it’s such a heartbreaking story

absolutely correct. i feel like people are more interested in performing a fake idea of perversion/naughtiness for social credit, as opposed to actually being interested in anything they're talking about. no real respect or understanding

Love this analysis. Perverts get a bad rap but they may be the only people capable of making great art

Would you consider a clockwork orange to perverted? I think in a more traditional sense (patriarchal) yes especially if they didn’t include the a$5ault scenes. I feel like it makes the viewer uncomfortable

I hate that people assume sex or erotic images are evil or bad in some way. It feels like there’s a fear about seeing something that’s “grossly sexual”

I think a big part of this is the societal taboo we have around desire and sex. You have to have a baseline non-judgmental understanding of those things to be able to explore eroticism, perversion, and kink in art. But when people feel shame or discomfort around sex, they’re too busy dealing with THAT to engage critically with the nuance. (I speak as someone who was raised Mormon and has since left and now writes spicy romance and works as an intimacy coordinator and consent educator.)

Really interesting analysis!!! Made me think of two different things: one is that I recently saw Blue Film which is deeply perverted but I wouldn't saw erotic. It was an unflinching look at the taboo and unfortunately a lot of reviews I read didn't seem to understand it wasn't endorsing the acts, and I wondered if that's because people assumed it was just going to be fun and kinky. Im also reminded how I recently saw a video criticizing people who reduce films like The Piano Teacher (which admittedly I haven't seen) as "she's just like me" cinema, only talking about the sexual aspects and not the more uncomfortable aspects, and I was reminded how I ADORE Catherine Breillat's Romance BECAUSE of the uncomfortable moments. And I have made "she's just like me" comments about that film but because the sex and the taboo in it are both familiar.
