It’s shearing season over here! And before anyone asks… yes, alpacas NEED to be sheared. In fact, not shearing them can actually become dangerous for their health. Unlike wild animals, domesticated alpacas have been bred for generations to continuously grow fleece. That means their wool doesn’t naturally stop growing or shed on its own. If left unshorn, they can overheat in warm weather, struggle to move comfortably, develop skin issues, and even become vulnerable to infections and parasites hiding deep in the fiber. Most alpacas should be sheared once a year, usually in late spring or early summer before temperatures rise. Think of it less like “taking something away” from them… and more like finally letting them take off a giant winter coat they’ve been trapped in for a year! Here are 5 fun alpaca facts: 1. Alpacas hum to communicate with each other. 2. They can recognize faces and build strong bonds with their herd. 3. Their fleece is incredibly soft, hypoallergenic, and warmer than sheep’s wool. 4. They’re naturally curious but also wonderfully awkward. 5. And despite what people think… alpacas and llamas are NOT the same animal. Here’s the difference: • Alpacas are generally smaller, fluffier, and bred mainly for fiber. • Llamas are larger, stronger, and were historically used as pack animals. • Alpacas have shorter, spear-shaped ears. • Llamas have those iconic banana-shaped earsz Another fun fact. The all black alpaca in photo #3 was abandoned by his mother shortly after birth. For the first six months of his life, he lived with me and Sarah… in our bathroom. 6 bottle feedings a day. Tiny baby noises. Little hoof taps across the bathroom floor. The whole thing. I kinda miss it lol A huge part of me secretly wanted Salem to become part of the dog pack forever. But loving animals also means giving them what’s best for THEM, not what feels best for us. And now watching him out there with the others, fresh haircut and all, makes me emotional every single time. Sometimes rescue looks like simply saving an animal but most often it looks like letting them become who they were always meant to be ❤️
