I remember first learning about the potato famine in elementary school and I distinctly remember the teacher portraying it like they should have diversified their crops and never would have happened… but in a way that they just ate too many potatoes and not that there were actually reasons why the potato was the predominant crop.

The Great Famine occurred when land rent went so high they had to give away the sheep, cows, chickens, vegetables and grains to pay the rent. Potatoes were plentiful and not as much in demand by the landlord

There were a lot of reasons The Great Hunger hit us worse over here than other European countries who had also recorded a potato blight. Things like all other goods being exported to England, the potato crop being generally thought of as ‘easy’ to grow, the stereotype of the Irish being ‘lazy’ and of course the English government blocking aid from other countries because it was more than they were giving. If it wasn’t for the native Cherokee people (fresh off the trail of tears) sending us corn I don’t think a lot of people would have survived
