@twohottakes.us: AITA for making my ex a birthday cake even though his new partner told me they already ordered one? #redditreadings #redditstories #twohottakes #Relationship #aita #aitareddit #storytelling #fyp
YTA because part of growing up is learning that things change sometimes and that doesn't mean you hate someone. They could've had a conversation with the kids about respecting the other parent's tastes and the SO's request and used that as an opportunity to brainstorm something else to make for the kids to give the other parent. Also it doesn't really sound like the KIDS made the cake with help from OP.

Nta, coming early was a good compromise - sounds like current likes to cause problems where there are none.

YTA. Kids could be told, "New partner is making a cake this time, so let's plan something else you can do for daddy!"

I’m watching this while my ex husband is sitting in my living room and we’re eating dinner with our kids. Why is it so weird when ex’s don’t hate each other?? Why is it wrong to do something for your ex if your kids are asking for it?

See this is where emotional maturity and understanding come into play. As a partner to someone with kids you should always operate with the understanding that the shared children will have routines with their parents that you will have to be comfortable with. Especially with young children. If these were teens this definitely wouldn’t be an issue. But this was a child initiated request because of history. Mom even offered compromise. Maturity would have been to understand and accept the compromise.

you are because you have to communicate with your former partner about the situation and why you were creating the cake. you didn't do that. instead you talked to their partner. you needed to directly communicate the issue with your ex

People need to understand that when it comes to dating somebody that has already had children with somebody else a lot of boundaries and a lot of rules change. you’re asking children that have had a tradition of making something for their parent to stop doing it because their new partner doesn’t like it I hate to say it, but the tradition of the childhood goes before the new partner and I don’t have any children.
