I spent 9 years in Arabic school and earned two certificates. However, I do not like being called “Alfa.” It is not because I cannot read the Qur’an or because I lack knowledge of my religion. Rather, I believe that the title carries a level of responsibility and example that I do not feel I currently live up to. I do not want to mislead anyone by accepting a title that may cause people to see me as a model of perfection. I understand that people in our society often learn more from what they observe in our behavior than from what we say.
