![How long since you heard silence? In the Danube Delta, the engine cuts low and the whole world turns liquid. The water lies flat as polished obsidian, reeds hiss in the wind like old cassette tapes, and every narrow canal feels smuggled out of another century. Romania keeps places like this hidden in plain sight. A labyrinth of floating villages, weathered docks, cormorants drying their wings on crooked branches, and fishermen who still read the currents the way priests once read smoke. The Delta is where the Danube dies slowly and magnificently after crossing ten countries before spilling into the Black Sea. More than three hundred species of birds pass through here, including the great white pelicans that arrive in heavy formations, prehistoric and slightly ridiculous, like flying sacks of bone and feathers. In places like Mila 23 or Sfântu Gheorghe, life still bends around water. Mail comes by boat. Children learn channels before streets. The sunsets stain everything copper and tobacco brown. And somewhere between the stillness and the endless reeds, you begin to understand why people disappear here for weeks. The Delta strips away noise with almost surgical patience. No monuments.
