Then the story reminds you Omelas explicitly has no king. That’s kinda one of the key parts. The “king” is these ideas of blind equality that decides a child who never got a choice is equally worthy of pain of any one individual who chose to stay in Omelas, leaving the reader with the question as to whether that paradigm shift meant they saved the child or left it behind.

I've read several books that did this exact thing, and I hate it. The original short story very intentionally never presented saving the kid as an option, doing that is a huge misunderstanding of the story.
