Attorney Brian Panish questioned Peter Grossman for about two hours on Friday and will continue on Monday. Grossman is a key witness in the punitive damages phase of the trial over the Iskanders' wrongful death lawsuit because punitive damages must correlate to a defendant's income, and Panish told jurors Peter Grossman is helping his wife shield her assets. The jury in Los Angeles on June 2 found Rebecca Grossman and Scott Erickson each liable for $176 million in compensatory damages: $8 million for past damages and $51 million for future damages for Mark Iskander, $6 million and $42 million for future for Jacob Iskander, $10 million to Nancy Iskander for past emotional distress and $25 million for future, and $6 million for past emotional distress and $28 million for future to younger brother Zachary Iskander. Peter Grossman was a defendant in the lawsuit because his wife’s SUV was registered in his name. Erickson, a retired Major League Baseball pitcher, was speeding in a separate vehicle near his girlfriend Rebecca Grossman when Grossman struck the Iskander brothers as they were in a marked crosswalk with their mother and younger brother near Westlake Village on Sept. 29, 2020. Both Erickson and Grossman had been drinking alcohol, and witnesses said they appeared to be racing their Mercedes-Benz AMGs. Grossman, now 62, is serving 15 years to life in prison; prosecutors dismissed a misdemeanor reckless driving charge against Erickson after he recorded a public service announcement about safe driving with Grossman's help. "Do you think it's an accident when someone drinking is racing and going 70-80 miles an hour on a 45 mile an hour residential area? You think that's an accident?" Panish asked. Judge Huey Cotton overruled an argumentative objection and Grossman answered, "Mr. Panish, you're making a statement that I don't believe to be completely accurate. I believe that it's a tragic accident. Rebecca was definitely involved, but this fact that you're, you're saying back to me, I accept the fact that that's been stated here. But if you're asking me to recite your verbiage right now, I have difficult time with that." Cotton struck the "comments" as non-responsive. "Can you try to answer my questions, please?"
