@sbeno.art: Here's my honest thoughts and experience of someone who has a bachelors in 3D animation and VFX + what I wish I had done or what I wish I knew before going. If this video actually reaches people beyond my followers, I'd love to know peoples experience as well so feel free to share! For people who are trying to make a decision and figure out if going to a school specialized in 3D can benefit them, I did write an entire article about it on my substack as well so you check out my substack in my bio for that! #animationcareer #artschool #3danimation #animationstudent

I’ve 3D modeled for 10 years and do it self employed professionally and I can say I am not skilled enough to get a job elsewhere.

I think one of my biggest regrets while studying videogame art was not looking for work experience or connecting with people from the industry as soon as I finished my first year. Gaining experience and connections would have given me such a great advantage and would have helped me not to feel as lost as I did once I graduated. I share a very similar experience to yours and struggled going from being praised for my work while in school to not good enough by studios and companies.

Anyone going into art I would encourage if they’re passionate but I’d also HIGHLY reccomend they take business courses as well. Impossible to rely on anyone in this industry for consistency atm

I went. And was disappointed. They seriously held back. Instead of teaching at our pace they would give tidbits while holding good stuff for the next $2500 semester.

I wish this information was way more available to kids going into school. I was soooo lucky to have a conversation with a guy in the industry before I started and his advice changed my trajectory in school completely. I wish he knew the impact he had. On top of that I was fortunate enough to have a prof who connected me to into an internship that led to my first gig. I got very lucky but also worked very hard to build a skill set. I don’t think people understand the work it takes to stand out in a pretty competitive business

i'm in my last year of collage here on México City, and i recently went to a festival were i had my first professional portfolio review. They distroyed me (it was a storyboard storyreel that i had worked on class) that's when it clicked to me, that even tho my work had gotten a 95% grade, that in industry standard is barely junior level. So it really put me on perspective.

Preach. I worked my ass off, networked a ton and had a great demoreel, but I graduated in 2023, right when the industry collapsed. I went to school in Vancouver as a US citizen, couldn’t get a work permit, and it took until this year to get any leads rolling. It’s all timing, messy, and scary as hell. Even if you do the right thing.

Eh you can learn it all online. This is not the 1900, that information is not locked inside a building anymore.

The only benefit of joining a school is the professors have connections in the industry otherwise your better off learning by yourself with short courses if you have a structured program

Something I always tried to convey to my peers: You aren't competing to have the best artwork in the class, you're competing with people who are already employed. So the work made in school by the end of it has to be comparable to a professional, because even WHEN it is, its still comes down to connections and opportunity.

To add my two cents as a recent grad ( about a month ago ) with a BFA in illustration for concept development with training in various 3d programs, it’s hard but it’s hard on purpose. I think a lot of people ( from my personal visual experience ) go into / leave a program expecting a degree to get you a job. But it won’t - this isn’t high-school where you can go draw during lunch. It’s brutal because it’s an industry, and it’s a financial commitment to bring people in who may ( or may not be ) good enough. My specific department didn’t teach me any 3d, but I know it’s a big part of the gaming industry especially for concept artist, so I sat myself down Junior year and decided to learn 3 programs. Now, I excel in almost 5 - because I pushed myself extensively for 2 years. So yes, it’s brutal, but a needed conversation with yourself is very important because while you should love what you do, you should also be able to make it a career☺️

People don’t realize but social media has everyone! I use X the most and I am able to interact with really professional 3d artists in their post and some literally have in their bio to tag them for questions. Staying up to date is important, I didn’t do much in my graphic design degree as well but now that I’ve transferred I know I can’t do that anymore.

Same exact college major. Took me six years to land a full time industry job. Thankfully, my mentors helped me establish expectations on the job field. I’m soooo glad that I put the work in finding grants, scholarships, etc. Being smart and calculated ended up saving me SO much money.

ye, I didn't really had a choice where I'm going (I'm broke, could go to closest city). my uni didn't prepared me for anything. they were even mocking me for wanting to go into commercial animation and kit independent gallery art. I'm still looking for a job, still building my portfolio. if any of you have opportunity to go to good school - do it. or if you have resources for consultation with people from industry - show then your portfolio. find a guide. do everything you can. if you don't have resources - use every free help you can get. also - indrusty is really hard right now. almost no junior positions, and if there are some people on mid level are getting those. I hope you all get a chance eventually, me included. don't give up guys.

I graduated from my digital animation career at the end of 2025, fortunately I am working in a comic project but at the time I haven't found a job, my thesis was a 3D videogame, I hope I can find something related to that, but I still think that I have to improve my portfolio

same, I pivoted away from 3D entirely. I picked up C4D for light 3D motion graphics stuff but I'm so far from good despite having a bachelor's in it
