@themegandaily: #DidYouKnow #museumtiktokcontest Did you know women traveling without a male companion (preferably a relative) were not allowed entry to the United States? There was one extremely notable exception and that’s the case of Frank Woodhull. Please note that this is a sensitive topic for many, and the words and pronouns used are meant to be those used by Frank Woodhull during the time period. Frank Woodhull was born in Canada and lived in California. He then went on holiday the England, and because he was not a naturalized citizen, had to pass through Ellis Island on the way home. One of the officials request Woodhull take shirt off for a tuberculosis exam. This is when Woodhull made a shocking confessions. Woodhull was in fact a woman. Woodhull was born Mary Johnson. Woodhull had very masculine features including a faint mustache. He used this to his advantage and lived life as a free and independent male. Frank Woodhull appeared before officials and pleaded his case. He was deemed a desirable immigrant and permitted entry. At the Ellis Island RECORDS DISCOVERY CENTER and Ellis Island immigration museum you can search Frank Woodhull and learn more about the gateway to America. My grandmother, emigrating alone from Ireland in 1910, was detained at Ellis Island until her brother, who was a laborer in NYC, finished work for the day and came to “claim her.” Her name appears on a detainees’ list, which also indicated she was served a lunch (and I am sure was charged for it) while waiting.

we tried to look up my great grandpa, but we only knew his name and birth year, we didn't have enough info to narrow it down.

My family came to this country in the early 1900s but not through Ellis Island. My grandfather wand great grandfather were merchant mariners. They each became US citizens in other ports where their ships birthed.

My great grandma was 19 and arrived with her brother. That was fine, because he as a laborer he could support his spinster sister. He was 14.
