In 1964, Colonel Sanders was 73 years old. KFC had grown rapidly, but managing a fast-expanding international franchise required substantial capital, infrastructure, and management that he did not have. Selling the company gave him: US$2 million upfront (a very large sum at the time), a guaranteed lifetime income, and relief from the burden of running the business. Had he kept the company, there was no guarantee it would have become the global brand it is today. Much of KFC's explosive international growth occurred after the sale, driven by large corporate owners with the resources to expand worldwide.

Operating a hospitality business as an individual or even a few individuals is a highly stressful and demanding business. $2M at that time was worth a lot more in today's value, and if he used it wisely to invest in other vehicles he's sorted for life with a great deal of freedom and lifestyle.
