I was a tempt for a holistic dentist. Didn’t know what I was getting myself into. Patients that went in there were highly paranoid people/ OCD/ or “TLC” patients. These poor people were just being taken advantage of. Also I almost passed out when I had the gas mask on. I never went back lol

Most of you have never removed an amalgam filling, it gets everywhere no matter how strong your suction and water is. It’s best to be safe.

There was a study done in the U.K. in the 1980s where amalgam fillings were removed in the presence of Hg monitoring equipment. Removed dry, the Hg meter went off the scale. (the research was done on a manikin). Water spray was introduced, Hg meter went to zero. Then, HVE (high volume evacuation) suction was tried, again, the Hg meter went to zero. Both decent water spray and HVE used together were deemed to be perfectly adequate for the removal of amalgam. Around the same time, triple water sprays on handpieces became standard to replace the former single water spray to ensure adequate water spray reaching the tooth. A word of advice for dental nurses today, never ever use a “salivary ejector” for old filling removal, but always use a ‘HVE’ tip. Learning how to use this is a skill but don’t default and fall back on the easier but totally inadequate salivary ejector.

The same holistic dentists give every patient a full view CBCT too. No specific indication, only explaining the detail is better than a normal FMX.

Patient asked me if I was doing SMART protocol for amalgam removal which is a 25 step procedure which this likely is. I said dryshield and suction and she cancelled all her appointments.
