Red blood cells begin their life in the soft center of the bones, where stem cells receive gentle signals that guide them toward this role. As they grow, they divide and slowly develop the traits needed to carry oxygen. In the early stages, they still hold a nucleus, and during this time they begin packing themselves with large amounts of hemoglobin, the protein that allows them to carry oxygen to every part of the body. As the cells mature further, they tighten their internal structures and prepare to let go of the nucleus. Losing the nucleus frees up space for even more hemoglobin. Their shape becomes flexible and smooth, allowing them to glide easily through tiny blood vessels. Once they are fully formed and rich in hemoglobin, they move from the bone marrow into nearby blood vessels. The bone marrow sends millions of red blood cells into the bloodstream every second. These fresh cells replace older ones that are cleared out by the spleen. This ongoing cycle keeps oxygen flowing to all tissues, supports energy production, and helps the body stay healthy and active.
