Doesn't always work. You check in within 24 hours and can go on the app and try to change seats (if basic econ) seats are available. Else ask the agent when you check in. If traveling with multiple people set preferences to set together. I was lucky to have a group of 12 people sit next to each other last week's intl trip but that's luck and I am grateful.
