So what is the solution ? Build? Where are you going to get the land to begin with ? If you have the land where are you going to get the money to build? Or you buy outright? Where are you going to get the money to buy a house of say 200,000 to 300,000 pounds outright ? Pay rent for the rest of your life? The chances are you are helping someone (your landlord) paying his mortgage and even getting something small in his pocket. So far so good on the downside of mortgage. But no one has come with a solution.
