@table.time.w.dan: Many such cases. What if you tried a system where half of your sheet didn’t cover what you can do in a fight? #dnd #ttrpg #tabletopgames #roleplaying #dungeonsandragons

If you want rules light role play, play Blades in the Dark. If you want 80-90% combat, play Lancer. If you want a bit of both, play Pathfinder 2e. Pls just start broadening your horizons beyond DnD. This goes for anyone reading this.

Because you heard “I like role playing more than combat” and thought that meant “I want virtually no combat and it needs to feel awful when combat is inevitable”

The thing is that ironically, the "roleplay prioritizing" games actually feel more limiting because they establish rules that gamify the roleplaying experience, so you have to work within a more limiting framework. This isn't *always* the case ofc, and some people get more creative when working with that framework, but that's my two cents. That said, yeah there are more TTRPGs than just D&D

DAGGERHEART. I have been a faithful d&d player for like 10 years but daggerheart is quickly taking its place. I highly encourage everyone to try it, especially if you're a roleplay heavy player.

my beef with d&d is that it forces the gm to be an unpaid game designer. there are entire rules that fundamentally don't do anything (foraging table stands out to me) and the game's culture has kind of evolved into "the gm remembers the rules so you dont have to"

Some of your commenters have a very narrow view of what a game that prioritizes RP over combat is. Play more games, people

Most Systems “designed for roleplay” restrict your options within it. I don’t like other systems because I don’t wanna be forced into lore or factions, just let me be a little guy

Roleplaying isn’t a system thing it’s a table thing. You don’t need rules to roleplay. And I wouldn’t want them anyway. What do you mean you are stopping the RP to roll dice? Lmao.

The worst thing is when people assume "roleplay mechanics" means rolling dice after every sentence. That's not what we mean. I'm talking about Alien RPG stress dice. Red Markets dependants system. Lancer's downtime options. Shadowrun's lifestyle costs. Orbital Blues' swansong for character death. Vampire the Masquerade touchstones. There are millions of things that systems do to promote RP that don't require you to stop the scene and drop dice.

I have nothing against people who want high-roleplay dnd games. But I take issue when you’re trying to forcibly reshape the dnd chassis to fit a game that another system would definitely fit better.

yeah, because I want roleplaying, not game mechanics. I want game mechanics for the part of the game that *aren't* a roleplaying priority, like combat. and I want social interaction where people don't have to drop dice for everything for the social interactions

most people never leave dnd, mostly because it has hundreds and hundreds of accommodations. Still i am someone that prefers role-playing and my favorite systems are Vampire the masquerade and Daggerheart.
