Is Method sustainable or is it greenwashing? Welcome back to the series where I’m breaking down whether or not sustainable brands and products are ACTUALLY what they say they are. Method was originally started by two men who wanted clean ingredients also safe from the environment. But in 2017 it was bought by the S.C. Johnson company and some of these values have changed. Starting with the good stuff: Method products are paraben free, phthalate free, cruelty free, and most recently have introduced refill bottles and aluminum soap dispensers (which I’m a fan of!). They use RSPO Certified Sustainable Palm Oil and as for packaging - they’ve introduced PCR plastic into their bottles (only the hand soap bottle is fully 100% PCR). Most of their formulations are only partially plant-based or biodegradable, but I like that they have some different limited edition products that give back to different charities. HOWEVER - In 2021, Method settled a lawsuit about labeling their products as non-toxic and natural when in fact they were not. So I guess now that they've removed those words, it's a little less greenwash-y. I’ve reviewed Method for the past 2 years, and this is the first time I’m seeing an entire page dedicated to transparency of their sustainability practices, so it’s actually cool to see a brand become more transparent. It’s definitely progress! So maybe I’ll pick up some refillable products next time I’m at the store. ◡̈ Let me know what you think, and get ready because the entire month of March we’re counting down to Earth Month with 31 Sustainable or Greenwashing videos - so if there is a brand you want to see, let me know! @methodproducts #sustainableorgreenwashing #method
