You do not need React to do this and this is not why people use React. The literal reason to use React is that CSS used to have limited functionality (which is mostly not even true now) and javascript in the backend would have to make constant janky updates to the DOM which is very slow and looks awful. React creates a virtual DOM which it manipulates in the backend which prevents the jank
