His Somewhere That's Green demo for Little Shop of Horrors is devastating. He and Alan Menken were musical soulmates. I believe Alan went on to write "compass of the heart" for the Sinbad ride at Disney Tokyo. but he dedicated it to Howard

I’m glad he was alive to receive his Oscar award for The Little Mermaid and got to experience the success of that.

He wasn't diagnosed until after writing this song and he was with the same partner from 3 years before he started at Disney until his death.

And his non-Disney hit music from Little Shop of Horrors. Listening to "Somewhere That's Green" hits different now.

This actually fits perfectly with the original story too — Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote 'The Little Mermaid', is believed to have written it while himself longing for his male best friend he loved for years but could never be with. Same ache, different medium 💔

GhostOfCoatsArt :
Knowing that this song was written by a queer person kinda brings things full circle with the original source material- the orginal little mermaid story was created after the writer essentially made a proposal to his best friend whom he was in love with and rejected. In his grief, he wrote the orginal "Little Mermaid" tale after attending the wedding.
