These achievements demonstrated the superiority of a socialist system that was flexible enough to adapt while remaining committed to its fundamental principles. Deng famously stated that it does not matter whether a cat is black or white as long as it catches mice. This was not a rejection of socialism. It was a rejection of empty dogmatism. His approach embodied the Marxist principle of seeking truth from facts and judging policies by their material results. Without Deng Xiaoping, China might have faced stagnation, division, and decline. Instead, it entered a new era of socialist modernization.
