Very quickly, the word becomes a predictor that they’re going to lose the item, which can turn it into a game of keep-away or even encourage possessive behaviour. Instead, teach your dog that “drop it” means something better is coming. Start by offering a high-value reward of either PLAY or for dogs that don’t want to let go start with FOOD when they let go of an item. As soon as they drop it, mark the behaviour and reward generously.
