As a military dad my kids thought the same thing until they all joined. It is a bout discipline. Every thing they teach you is about discipline. It sets you up for military life cause once you are out of boot that discipline carries with you, not just in your military career but also into your home life.

Dog Beans :
builds discipline. idk how your dad does it but small things like making your bed is how you build into bigger responsibilities. i get that its tedious and seems pointless but small tasks and attention to detail will develop a greater responsibility. good dad imo.

They play pretend? Or they’ve gone on to the rank the drill instructors were or are drill instructors themselves

Well boot camp is an experience I'm proud of. We had to make beds after everything was thrown everywhere. In like 2 minutes. If mine was perfect but someone else didn't I'm screwed
