I've always wondered why in Okami it was called Nippon and not Nihon. 💞 your videos are the best!

In Japanese we still say Japanese things are 和 (wa) such as 'wagyu' for Japanese beef, 'wafuku' for Japanese clothes, and 'washoku' for Japanese food. I also speak Chinese and same for Chinese 'Han' things. For western things it's 'yo' as in 'yofuku' for western clothing.

similar for China! China is called 中国 (zhong guo), that basically means “middle country” or “the center country” which means that everything revolves around China! Another fun fact is that the US’s shortened Chinese name is 美国 (mei guo), meaning “beautiful country” lol. I love language history!

Fun fact: china still calls itself the land of ‘center’. Zhonghua. Zhong meaning middle or central. In Polish China was often referred to as ‘Państwo Środka’ - ‘land of the center’ - as recently as a few decades ago. Probably other languages had this name as well.

I love linguistics. ESPECIALLY etymology. One of the biggest reasons I fully switched from physical books to ebooks is because way too often, I'll randomly be like, 'huh, I wonder where this word comes from,' and stop to look it up and on ebooks, I just have to touch the word to pull up the definition, etymology, synonyms, and wiki entries. It's so fun

The monarch of Japan at the time was a woman, Empress Suiko. She likely dictated the contents of the letter with Prince Shōtoku writing her words down.

TBH I’d watch an epic live action movie about the journey to the emperor and back.. but thank you for explaining the Nippon/Hihon inconsistency I’ve had since being here.
