depending on the state, electricians run the stat... I hate that too. most thermostat screws don't mount that way.

Any HVAC installer that knows what he’s doing would put a 2X4 there. The way they did it both screws will be just anchors in drywall. Eventually anchors come out.

I do retrofit and I hate that there is never some sort of block behind the stat, always just a million holes, then end up having to move it higher just to have a spot to skrew to

Every thermostat I have ever installed comes with wall anchors. Plus, the block you are wanting will catch the slack in the future when you need a little bit more wire.

When I would service residential equipment about 30 years ago, every house I went to had drywall issues around the thermostat. It seemed people never used anchors never put any support behind it. I just never understood it. I would remove the thermostat. Make the whole little bigger, where the wire was coming out, stick a piece of wood behind it and do exactly what you want them to do just not as big of a piece of wood.
