The RN Couple Diaries :
Answer: B
Rationale: The kidneys are responsible for excreting excess potassium. In renal failure, potassium accumulates in the bloodstream, leading to hyperkalemia, a potentially life-threatening electrolyte imbalance that can cause severe cardiac dysrhythmias..
B. Hyperkalemia - Expected finding due to decreased potassium excretion
A. Hypokalemia - Not typical unless caused by diuretics or GI losses
C. Hypercalcemia - Renal failure more commonly causes hypocalcemia
D. Hyponatremia - May occur, but hyperkalemia is the most classic and dangerous imbalance
NCLEX Tip: Kidneys fail → Potassium rises
Watch for signs of hyperkalemia: Muscle weakness, Peaked T waves, Widened QRS complexes, Cardiac dysrhythmias
🩺NCLEX Priority: High potassium + ECG changes = emergency
Memory Trick: “When the kidneys quit, potassium sticks.”
For everyone who participated I see you 👏🏾 Well done! We’re doing this again tomorrow, so come ready 😊 Save & share to help someone else learn! Follow for more nursing tips and education😁
