When I served in Afghanistan. I asked why there were so many gay men in the country. The guy pretty much said that it was very expensive to find a woman to marry.

No . It's old tradition from the ancient Persian empire prior to Islam. nothing to do with the separation of men and women. you will find this in Tahiti and India but not in Saudi Arabia
