Muammar Gaddafi was a military officer and political leader who ruled Libya for more than four decades, from 1969 until 2011. He came to power after leading a coup that overthrew King Idris I and established the Libyan Arab Republic. Gaddafi promoted a political philosophy outlined in his Green Book, which he described as an alternative to both capitalism and communism. He created a system he called “Jamahiriya,” meaning “state of the masses,” claiming that ordinary citizens would govern through local committees. In practice, however, political power remained highly centralized around him and his inner circle. During his rule, Libya benefited from substantial oil revenues, which funded infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social programs. At the same time, his government was widely criticized for suppressing political opposition, restricting civil liberties, and committing human rights abuses. Gaddafi’s relationship with Western countries fluctuated. Libya was accused of supporting international militant groups and was linked to incidents such as the Pan Am Flight 103 bombing. In the 2000s, he sought improved relations with Western governments and reduced Libya’s international isolation. In 2011, amid the broader Arab Spring, an uprising against his rule developed into a civil war.
