Vulnerability Builds Bonds It’s not easy to expose the parts of your life you don’t want others to know. The insecurities that are, once revealed, can leave you open to hurt. We resist this relationship builder because we don’t want to give our power away. What power? We’ll that’s the lie, there is no power in holding back, but the voices from our past tell us to buck up and shut up. Usually, these vulnerabilities are only larger than life in our own eyes. Those we don’t tell, once told, are rarely shocked or surprised, only left in wonder how something so small held you captive. I recently had one of those moments with a friend. The revelation was something that nags at me, but once talked about, it lost its hold. The very things we try to hide can be doorways to deeper friendships. But the fear of a slamming door keeps us from pushing it open. For me, trust is a tough nut to crack. I’ve lived most of my life in the public eye. People have high expectations of those they put on a pedestal or hate because of the position held. Putting your face on a television or now a large internet platform is like a magnet for critics. Like rabid dogs, they will find anything to help rip the flesh off of you. What I am learning is one: find people you trust and tell. Don’t be consumed by the cultural perfection of others. Do your best and let it go. Take the risk. I truly believe the enemy of our souls understands the value of vulnerability and will lie, cheat, and manipulate us to keep us from opening doors to those around us. Being betrayed and hurt is part of life. Being vulnerable is not the enemy. It’s the gateway to freedom.
