@kporter.stuff: Engineers own the why, the design decision, the analysis, the judgment call. Technicians own the how, the build, the test, the installation. Different responsibilities, neither inferior, and the engineers who treat that distinction with genuine respect consistently outperform the ones who don’t. After 40 years working alongside technicians: the best ones know things about what actually happens in the physical world that aren’t in any textbook. Ask them before you finalize anything. ‘Is there anything about this that’s going to give you trouble?’ The answers will make your design better every single time. 🙌🏼⚙️

Both parties should act like both parties are smarter than they are. I’ve had engineers tell me I was wrong and the prints were right. I explained over and over the wiring was wrong. So we made the equipment work and the 2 engineers kept asking us how it was working. Just told them they are engineers you figure it out. Avoid them to this day.

We call that design for manufacturing. I see unfortunately, many designs are not easy or expensive to actually produce. Technicians know this through the experience you mentioned. generally they will share it.

As a welder fabrication technician with 40 years of experience I have sent many blueprints back with notes saying this is not going to work. 🤣

I'm an engineer that has worked in maintenance and worked with maintenance as an engineer. An engineer that can and will turn wrenches will always be better than one that doesn't!

Hey, from South Africa here. I'm a professionally registered Engineering Technologist (Civil), and over here we generally start our careers with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. As people gain experience, however, those boundaries tend to blur. Before long, technologists are doing significant design work, managing projects, making engineering decisions, and in some cases even supervising engineers. In my experience, once you've spent 10+ years in the industry and have built a solid track record, the distinction becomes far less about your original qualification and far more about your competence, experience, and professional reputation. I've worked alongside engineers for years and, in many cases, performed exactly the same functions. At that stage, the people most concerned with maintaining rigid hierarchies are often those who rely on titles rather than accomplishments to establish their standing.

Engineering manager here....one question I ask in every interview is how they view the technician relationship (and operations). You will learn more from a technician than anyone else.

Honestly, there are many designs that fail to work as expected in the practical world, and technicians have to do some modifications on the them to be able to work. Engineers should never look down on us, coz we actually know a lot in the real world than the virtual.

Surely it depends on experience. A newly qualified engineer should make a beeline for the the most experienced tech he can find. They will learn more in 3 months than they learnt in all the time they spent at college.

As a technician of 15 years, I really appreciate when engineers ask for feedback because it feels like common, deserved consideration.

Also ask the service technician/ team. The production team touches the product once, the service team touch it for the rest of useful life.
