"Blessed art thou among women" is Elizabeth's greeting in Luke 1:42. so the first half of the prayer is Scripture. the second half, "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death," was added by the Church over the following centuries. there are 20 mysteries now, not FIFTEEN in October 2002, Pope John Paul II added five Luminous Mysteries: Jesus' baptism, the wedding at Cana, his preaching, the Transfiguration and the Last Supper. he suggested praying them on Thursdays. the old set was Joyful, Sorrowful and Glorious. the new ones fill the gap between Jesus' childhood and his Passion, and they came in the apostolic letter Rosarium Virginis Mariae. the prayer after each decade came from FATIMA "O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell" is said to have been taught to the Fatima children in 1917. the Church approved it, and many Catholics add it after every decade. it is not required and it is not part of the original Rosary, so you can pray it or leave it out.
