for those who are confused (since i love explaining things like this) by “going out of your way,” she means that you purposely GO to them, even though you dislike them, to be nice to them. it’d be like teasing. if they come to YOU and they are nice to you, then the polite thing is to be nice to them back. you aren’t forced to hang around them all the time, that’s what she meant by “going out of your way” if you’re purposely around somebody you don’t like.
