@christopherthelawyer: HR is not on your side at work. And most employees find out too late. They document your complaints and file them away. They coach your manager on how to build a case against you. They control the narrative about you before you even know something is wrong. And when the severance offer lands on your desk, HR calculated that number to protect the company — not you. Employment law is tricky. Some of their tactics lead to constructive dismissal claims. Understanding how HR actually works is the first step to protecting yourself. As an HR manager I have to disagree with some of these. Mainly HR does not control an employee’s narrative. Management creates that narrative. HR does takes notes, but it’s to protect both employees and company. In my company HR absolutely does not decide any severance. Executives do. HR does not dictate pay for employees, operations controls that. In my company my role is to be neutral. While some of these things happen in some companies, it certainly isn’t applicable in all companies.
