@rob33521: This restaurant posted a sign saying: "If you can't tip your server, don't eat out." Then they show a $92.50 bill and suggest a 40% tip, bringing the total to $129.50. I understand that servers work hard and deserve to be paid fairly. At the same time, many people feel tipping has gotten completely out of control. When a night out for dinner starts costing 30%, 40%, or more above the menu price, a lot of families simply can't afford it. So who's responsible? The customer? The restaurant owner? Or should servers just be paid a higher wage so tips become optional again? What do you think? German here. We learned tipping is optional and earned. It's our goodwill for the service and the quality of our time there. I am sorry that wages vary so damn much but it's not "my" job to ensure your fair payment.
