ragtime is a great revival of a great show. cats is a great revival of an awful show. they did something incredible with the direction of cats, thus the directing award, but there’s no saving the book or music, no matter how amazing the production itself is. ragtime is working with great source material, it was bound to win in my opinion, but I do agree with you on some fronts of this argument.

Nahhh. Cats was still Cats with dancing. What I saw of it just looked like pearls on a pig. I tried to want to see it, but as revolutionary as it may have been, it was all production and not in the score.

I'm always here for Ballroom and Black Joy winning, but I don't think it's fair to deny or minimize Ragtime winning. cats the Jellical Ball won a handful of Tony's, and Ragtime absolutely BODIED that revival.

Unless the book of ragtime has received some edits I’m not sure why people go so hard for the story. There are some real missteps with both the created characters and historical figures. The music is what keeps it afloat.

I love ragtime with my whole heart but I was actually so surprised they won over cats, especially since cats is a true revival and reinvention of the piece that doesn’t focus on the all star cast but the amount of joy and energy they put into that show and making it such a performance

Yo, I’ve watched Cats and Cats: The Jellicle Ball, Ragtime deserved that win. It’s genuinely peak and Both versions of Cats do kind of get outshined by the sheer power of Ragtime AND Joshua Henry combined.

Absolutely agree- Jellical ball was the more creative, MODERN, and all out joyful revival. I enjoyed the performances in Ragtime- they are talented cast- but otherwise, it’s an uninspired remake.
