As a mother of a special-needs adult, let me tell you it is very difficult and it’s not just about raising the child. It’s about worrying who will take care of this person once I can no longer do it.

My opinion, as a 28 year old-childfree for-now adult, is that this has nothing to do with me.

As a behaviour support practitioner that works in disability, I completely understand the decision. The amount of parents I see that are on the brink of sanity and coping at all times is unreal. The amount of parents I see that do not have a support network, that do not have capacity or financial capacity to care for a child with disability is also not ok. These people may be financially secure now but things can change. I cannot blame them for not wanting to take that risk for themselves and a child, who will ultimately be an adult with significant needs. Some people don’t have a village and they recognise their own strengths or lack there of. In the world we live in and the lack of supports already available for vulnerable people why would they want to jeopardise what security they have. This was a responsible decision that I’m sure they made within their own circumstances and scope to manage. If the world was full of amazing people like Dallas, I’m sure things would look different, but it isn’t and that’s why we shouldn’t judge, only ever support 🩷

I’m a social worker and a lot of the kids I work with have disabilities, are medically complex, or both. I’ve seen how hard it is to raise them, navigate all of the systems you have to navigate, and to make life altering decisions for both your child and yourself. It takes a strong person or set of parents to do it. I completely understand if people don’t feel like they can do it, because if they can’t and they still bring the child into the world, life will be even harder for that child.
