Sure but Chinese is the (or at least I like to say) Latin of East Asia. It forms the basis of formal language for hundreds of millions of people outside of the Chinese speaking world. Specifically talking about Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese.

As a westerner who learnt fluent chinese, literally every single thing about it was new for me. For example the word 'international' you could understand in spanish without knowing spanish cuz its similar. In chinese its 国际 (Guo Ji)

As an English and Spanish speaker, I found Arabic relatively easy but Mandarin extremely difficult.

I believe in the principle of "know your enemy," therefore my plans include learning Hebrew, and even mastering it.

Mandarin isn't that important because China isn't going to colonize the world. Important is respect for all language.

what about Mandarin in the territory of China? to what extent the local languages were exterminated in favour of Mandarin?

I'm learning Hungarian, Spanish and Chinese, as a Germanic speaker. I believe that it's more about motivation than anything else. If you sit down and learn, you'll do it.

So how can we get the rest of the world to learning Mandarin? schools can start making Mandarin compulsory like the way English is. Start having your kids learn when they are young. enroll them in a mandarin emersion class. or exchange program.

that's the same with English by the way, it's only familiar for people in Europe who speak germanic, nordic or romance langs. but it was never familiar to me! as an arabic speaker the only reason why I know english, not very fluently, is because I was forced to learn it in school!

I think your take is very euro-American centric. You forgot China’s surroundings. Also English is foreign to many people.

Not sure I agree with this opinion, 1. because this is quite a euro-centric take, many of the surrounding countries near China speak languages that are highly influenced by Chinese in vocabulary and writing, so it's a lot easier for them to learn 2. I think mandarin's lack of visibility on the world stage is more to do with China's stance on soft power, which until recently has been near to non-existent. Being as large and resource rich as China is there's not the same pressure to need to exert their language abroad

the Chinese Languages don't really have a lot else in their Language family besides Tibetan and one of the languages in Myanmar, meanwhile English is part of the enormous Indo European family, and Arabic part of the Afro Asiatic family both of which are quite large

no. Chinese spoken languages is very similar to Vietnamese, Thai,Lao. Chinese characters are being used in Japanese written language on every Japanese articles. On average, a Japanese highschool graduates would know more than 1000 Chinese characters. South Korea has their own writing system, but her law is written with many Chinese characters

you are right that Chinese is kind of isolated in the big linguistic family, not much other languages are similar to Chinese and it could extremely hard for other people to learn mandarin. But this doesn’t stop China from developing or becoming more important to the world than before. Having a language that earsier for foreigners to learn could be somehow beneficial for a country to develop, but it’s never necessary.
