@marc_sallinger: A single night in April wiped out an entire year of crops for some Delta County fruit farmers in western Colorado. A warm March caused Harrison Topp’s peach trees at Topp Farms in Paonia to bud weeks early. When temperatures plunged on April 17th he ran wind machines and lit fires — but it wasn’t enough. He lost everything. The drought made things worse — mudslides blocked irrigation for weeks. Sending home his seasonal crew from Mexico was the hardest day he’s had on the farm. He’s still out there tending the trees for next year. Peaches from Palisade nearby did not experience the same freeze. #Colorado #DeltaCounty #Farming #Drought #ColoradoNews
Seeing the same exact thing in New Jersey and parts of Georgia. We might have a whole summer without many peaches anywhere.

Palisade Colorado is still working and planning on having a wonderful year this year!! While delta has had a fall there is still other options around western Colorado that will still be plentiful!!

The Colorado Department of Agriculture confirmed the April freeze decimated crops across Delta County. Farms in Palisade just over the mountains were largely spared. Topp Farms partners with a Palisade farm and will still have a presence at Front Range farmers markets this summer, so keep an eye out for some of their delicious peaches!

Yep! All our peaches, cherries, apples and pluots froze out. Pretty bad when the trees bloom almost a month early lol it’s a slow summer for Fruit farmers here in Delta county. We will be back again next year though👍

It’s because right before the freeze, it was almost 80° for a good couple of weeks then the freeze killed the early blossoms.

Those peach trees aren't as big as other trees, I wonder if tarping the trees, to create a temporary greenhouse, would salvage the peach tree buds instead of them getting too cold.. please tests the idea for before next years problems, you could make a structure in advance

I have a tiny food forest in my suburban yard on the eastern side of the Rockies. My espalier pears flowered so early and lost the fruit in that temp fluctuation. Same with peony buds. 🥲 I was counting on those 20-30 pears for summer fruit & juice as prices escalate.

My brother and I bring up the Palisade peaches to Carbondale and Glenwood Springs. We feel so sorry for everyone in Delta and everywhere around us that lost crops this year.

Same thing here. the apple tree bloomed earlier than expected. The last snow storm froze all the blooms. So no apples this year.
