As Minister of War and commander-in-chief of the Ottoman Army, Enver was a central figure in military and political decision-making during World War I. In August 1914, Enver helped secure a secret alliance between the Ottoman Empire and Germany. He was instrumental in bringing the Ottoman Empire into World War I on the side of the Central Powers, believing that a German victory would restore Ottoman strength and allow the empire to regain lost territories. Following the Ottoman attack on Russian ports in the Black Sea in October 1914, Russia, Britain, and France declared war on the Ottoman Empire, opening a new front in the global conflict. Seeking a decisive victory against the Russian Empire, Enver personally led the Ottoman Third Army during the Caucasus Campaign. In December 1914 and January 1915, he launched the Sarikamish Offensive, an ambitious operation intended to encircle and destroy Russian forces. The campaign ended in catastrophe as freezing temperatures, disease, logistical failures, and Russian resistance devastated the Ottoman army. Tens of thousands of Ottoman soldiers perished, making Sarikamish one of the most disastrous defeats in Ottoman military history. Throughout the war, real power in the Ottoman Empire was concentrated in the hands of the Three Pashas: Enver Pasha, Talaat Pasha, and Cemal Pasha. Enver controlled military affairs and pursued an ambitious vision of strengthening the empire and expanding Ottoman influence among Turkic peoples beyond its borders. However, years of warfare exhausted the empire's economy, military, and population. By 1918, the Central Powers were collapsing. Although Ottoman forces advanced into the Caucasus after Russia's withdrawal from the war following the Russian Revolution, these gains came too late to alter the overall outcome. Following the Ottoman defeat and the signing of the Armistice of Mudros in October 1918, Enver and other leading Unionists fled the empire. After leaving the Ottoman Empire, Enver traveled through Germany, Russia, and Central Asia. He eventually joined the Basmachi movement, an anti-Bolshevik resistance fighting Soviet rule in Turkestan. On 4 August 1922, Enver Pasha was killed in battle against Soviet forces near Baldzhuan in present-day Tajikistan at the age of 40. His death marked the end of one of the most influential and controversial careers in late Ottoman history. Today, Enver Pasha remains a highly debated historical figure.
