@muddlethroughmummy: I’d been feeling “off” for a long time, but I never imagined the cause could be something so simple (and treatable): a severe iron deficiency. Looking back, the signs were there all along: • Hair thinning & increased shedding • Restless legs • Brain fog & difficulty concentrating • Cold hands & feet • Constant fatigue • Shortness of breath Like so many women, I explained everything away. I was a busy mum. I was getting older. Maybe it was stress. Maybe it was perimenopause. It wasn’t until I ended up in hospital that a doctor suggested checking my iron and B12 levels. Now I’m taking prescribed iron tablets and hoping to be referred for an iron infusion. More than anything, I just want to feel like myself again. My biggest takeaway? Just because a symptom can be explained away doesn’t mean it should be ignored. If something feels off, keep asking questions and advocate for yourself. Sometimes there really is an underlying cause and addressing it can make a huge difference to your wellbeing. Have you experienced iron deficiency? I’d love to hear your story below ❤️ #tiredmum #lowiron #irondeficiency #mumlife #womenshealthmatters
I’ve had the exact same feelings presuming it was perimenopause but my results have come back

I’ve had low vitamin D for about 15 years and now have a ferritin of 6. I was told to take OTC ferrous sulphate. Got it to 22 and now been told to stop and re test in July. We shall wait and see. Luckily my HB was normal, but they have said it’s just my diet causing the low ferritin. All other tests came back normal. I’ve never eaten so much beef and dried figs in my life!

My iron is at around 4/5 but my body won’t absorb iron so iron tablets make me worse and I have a severe needle phobia so can’t do transfusion 😭

Have you had to adjust your diet in a year? As well as iron tabs I’m trying to incorporate iron dense foods and increase my calories

Hi, do you know what your haemoglobin count was? Mine was 83 and I was referred for an iron infusion 2 weeks ago and I have my second one tomorrow, the energy and fatigue literally improved after a few days and I no longer crave ice!

I have a health condition so luckily monitored every 6months. On chatting to my consultant at one of these reviews, I said god I’m just knackered all the time but assumed because of the meds I’m on. She looked at me and said let’s do a few extra bloods. Ferritin of 6 and low vit d and she said ‘we are all mums and blame how we feel done in on running around after our babies and working and never think to check is all okay with us’. It’s made me very aware of things since and I’m grateful to her. She didn’t have to do those tests as they didn’t have any relation to my condition but she did and listened. Hope you perk up soon, look after yourself xxx

My daughter (14 years old) has just had ferritin levels come back as 6 and was told to just buy iron supplements from a pharmacy. No idea how much, how often etc! Would have thought a prescription would have been appropriate for a child!

The amount of women I speak to that have low iron is wild, including myself with most of these symptoms! But why is that? Why are there so many women that suffer with this 😕 I feel like we all need answers as to why 😔

Drinking tea when eating can stop iron being absorbed into your body. Advice is to avoid drinking tea right after a meal and wait 1-2 hours after eating or taking iron supplements before having a cuppa.

this has literally happened to me. found out yesterday my iron levels are in my boots. im at the end of marathon training and assumed it was that as im running over 60km a week and my kids have additional needs so im on the go constantly. im struggling to get out of bed for the last month. panic attacks when I am running, sleeping and during the day, awful insomnia lost my eyelashes too. started iron tablets and just really desperate to feel better.

my coeliac disease was discovered because of those same symptoms….. if you have any autoimmunity in the family maybe consider the blood test if you haven’t had it ❤️

I’ve just paid privately for an iron infusion and hoping it’s a miracle cure as I have so many of the same symptoms as you…my ferritin was 9. Having it retested in 3 months and 🤞 it’s better!
