context matters, it's the same concept as they're/their/there.

It seems like such a hard thing to learn! I’m amazed

I didn’t know there were multiple places/concepts to do signs. That’s actually very helpful to know, thank you.

I once told my dad "Did you hear what happened?" He said "No! I didn't hear anything all day!" He busted up laughing, but felt like a dodo.

could you do a video on ASL grammar structure?

everyone in the comments saying this is mean are wrong. ‘new learners’ need to respect those who are HOH/deaf and people who ACTUALLY sign ASL. not doing so and complaining about it almost feels ableist to me

I hate the way people who speak ASL just judge people trying to learn. No need to deliver this message like this.

Tbf that isn’t missing common sense, and it doesn’t make a learner an idiot for not knowing that. English people learning Spanish often mix up soy and Estoy (both mean ‘I am,’ but one is for permanent things like character traits and one is for temporary things like location and emotions). That doesn’t make them stupid. I’d still correct them so they know what they’re doing wrong, but they’re not stupid for it

I completely understand what you're doing here and this is important information. the only issue is that's common sense. that implies most people know this, as in common knowledge. so many people don't know what it's like to try to communicate through sign language. this is simply innocent ignorance. keep spreading your message, the more we can do to help each other out, the better!

Excuse my ignorance, this is a genuine question and I want to learn. Is it possible for people to get an accent (like an accent from NY vs an accent from TX, for example) in ASL? On the one hand I think no, but on the other, it seems to make sense to me.

the first part about not having common sense was kinda unnecessary

It would depend why you are learning. I am learning for my 3 year old who isn’t talking yet but has been doing good with signs.

I think that anyone who is truly wanting to learn sign language also needs to learn about Deaf culture and the history behind it. I took intro to ASL before I took a Deaf culture class and I really wish I had don’t it the other way. There were so many concepts that I didn’t understand but became very clear once I learned the history

Contextual common sense is a concept many people don't encounter until they start to learn a trade or skill. It underscores the importance of broadening our horizons.

Unfortunately some of this lack of sense is taught by the teachers. M oldest child was taught by a coda teacher but my other daughter's teacher is a school taught asl teacher. They were taught very differently.

it's much like any language. people start learning by direct translation, but that falls apart, since different languages have different synonyms. In the same way English distinguishes between pork and pig, but not between chicken and… chicken, other languages are going to do things differently.
