Can we normalize not using YouTube videos to teach a class and actually discuss the notes and subject. Like what happened to lecturing the class rather then just have your students write down notes on a YouTube video “teaching” algebra.

hot take as a student: stop ignoring the silent kids. I'm terrified of looking stupid but I do indeed have questions

I think testing students’ analysis abilities, rather than just memorization, is possible through multiple choice—I mean, the SAT does it. However, for me it’s a first step in assessing, not the last. I’ll use a multiple choice quiz early in a unit to see who is completely lost before we make it harder. Like, if you can’t figure out what the theme of any of these passages are when it’s multiple-choice, then when I ask you to come up with your own words to explain a theme things will REALLY go downhill. So it’s more of a tool to identify who is in need of remediation.

4th grade teacher here. It's ok to not give elementary kids the answer either.

I teach k-5. It’s always ok to not give students the answer. You can give them broad hints/help, but if they have the ability to answer it THEN THEY NEED TO BE MADE TO ANSWER IT or feel that consequence of struggle

least restrictive environment doesn’t always have to be an inclusion class and that’s okay, outside general education classes exist for a reason and if students need the support of a special education classroom where the size is smaller and the teachers are specifically equipped to meet their needs, there’s no shame in that!

The only one I somewhat disagree with as a student is the multiple choice one. I know the information, and I do remember it, but I never know how to put it into words. This could be a thing specifically with me, but I know a lot of other kids that have the same problem.

I don’t think this is what you intend, but as a dyslexic person, I will be forever grateful I was able to go to private school and have small class sizes where my teachers had more time to be 1 on 1 with students

It’s also okay to “be bored”. We can’t be entertained non stop. Get comfortable with the discomfort of being alone with our thoughts.

Nailed it. I want to add something about the roles the system makes us take on. Most, nearly all teachers, don't have the training or experience for those roles. A few like me do, but it's extremely rare.

To be honest, I was the first in my class all of my elementary and high school education, my teachers always said I was smart but I never felt like I learned new things I was always trying to study but I was almost all memory... I feel like the only thing a felt like I really learnt was English (it is my second language) but it was because I had other classes of English not in school 😭. I "understood" everything but if we didn't had classes of that in a month or two I forgot everything and had to "learn" again

I’m in college now, I took a math class last semester and was worried because I THOUGHT I suck at math, I still struggle with multiplication beyond 5s and low 6, though I chalk that up to being an issue from undiagnosed ADHD and just not taking my meds like I should’ve through elementary school, anyway, I was worried. I get to the part A of the class which is basically a “optional” class to go over the topics from the main class, and my god, that part A course was a GOD SEND, because I learned I don’t need the answer dangled in my face for me to find, but for the problem I’m doing to be explained differently from how it’s written while using examples from our notes. My teacher never gave me the answer unless I was confirming the answer I had was right. It helped me get a 73 on my final exam and pass with an 83

I commonly respond to students when they say “I need help” with “can you be specific with what I can help with because I’m not going to do it for you but I’m happy to clarify for you”.
