@itsmarizavillarreal: My mom used to gather me, my brother, and the neighborhood kids into a circle and tell us true stories before bed. Not fairy tales. Not bedtime stories. Stories about demons. Stories about being lifted off her bed in the middle of the night by something with red eyes and being dropped onto her sister across the room. Stories she swore were real. Stories my aunt later validated. Stories my grandfather told from his side of the experience. Did all of these things actually happen in South Texas? I have no idea. But I know these stories shaped me. This is what it looked like growing up in a house where spirituality wasn’t found in church pews. It was found in limpias, ojo de mal, candles burning on kitchen tables, and Sunday trips to the local botánica. My grandmother practiced brujería. Protection rituals were normal. Energy was discussed openly. Intuition was trusted. The supernatural wasn’t something we watched in movies, it was woven into everyday life. Whether you believe in ghosts, spirits, energy, or none of it at all, those experiences became part of the lens through which I learned to see the world. The stories, the fear, the traditions, the chaos, the love, and the lessons all became part of who I am. And that’s exactly why I wrote Raised by Fire. It’s more than a memoir.
