@kennareneeharper: The statistics said I should have become a statistic. A child whose mother tried to kill her. A child who grew up around addiction. A child who experienced incarceration, mental illness, instability, and trauma. Research tells us that children with enough adversity are at a much higher risk of addiction, poverty, incarceration, and repeating the cycles they were born into. For a long time, I was terrified those statistics would become my future. But statistics tell us what is common, not what is possible. Today, I’m married. I’m raising children in a safe home. My children don’t have to manage my emotions, walk on eggshells, or carry burdens that belong to adults. Not because healing was easy and certainly not because I have it all figured out. But because I decided the cycle would end with me. Healing isn’t just about surviving what happened to you.It’s about making sure it doesn’t get passed on to the people you love most.
