Could necessity also be something like breaking a habit or doing something that doesnt suit a characters personality? Like after a certain situation and what you learnt abiut the character thus far, you think you know how they are going to react but then they do something that completely contradicts the type of person you think they are or something that goes against their morals?

i just finished my first draft so im kinda new to writing. maybe my question is stupid but couldn’t repeating the same thing be used in a way of showing the character (in this example) kind of trying to process the fact that he was fired. like a shock showed through repetition

i like to use the find function and look for repeated phrases like that. Then figure out What I can change. so instead of saying the same thing, I either move to an action and body sensation. maybe a coping mechanism or restless body movement. If its really bad, sometimes existential dread and doomed speak is good for a moment.

You have an innate ability to succinctly explain writing pitfalls to someone who is either new or someone who wants to improve their work. Thank you so much for these videos as they have helped me see things of my own work that need correction before getting to developmental editing.

How do you feel about alliteration in prose? There’s obvious a point where it can be overdone, but I love the flow of it when it comes to melancholy observations. For example; my character is staring out a spaceship window, and I wrote that all she saw was ‘Silver stars and neverending nothingness.’ But I’m not sure if it’s too poetry-esque for a sci-fi book.

There's a new audiodrama i'm listening to called The Harbingers. They put us on unsettled ground in the first episode by telling us a man magically sent a city into outerspace. They then spend the next 15 episodes giving us footholds, just small pieces we can start to get settled on. By the time we're caught up and we get to witness him sending this city to space, it not only feels completely earned, but we as the audience feel how alive the story is. That's compounded by the fact that the action contrasts with the method of story-telling through typically "boring" police interrogation scenes with just a lawyer and the man sitting in a room talking about it.

I enjoy extending it by adding emotion. I guess you could call it micro characterization for this example You could go with how he worries about keeping up contact with his work friends or how he regrets that he did not asked out the colleague he had a friendly flirting thing going on. It adds a question on top how he copes and in your example he gets black out drunk and tries to forget.

I like the idea of using the sufficient beats as a tool to signify that somebody is stuck in the same place. Kinda like that dude who keeps talking about how he was a beast in high school.

Sometimes a beat. Is kind of… summary exposition. Nothing new — but it clarifies things for the audience. Like when Jake Giddes says to Evelyn Mulwray, “They’re blowing these farmers out of their land and picking it up for peanuts. You have any idea what th8s land would be worth with a steady water supply? About sixty million more than they
