Just had an onboarding meeting for college. they said if I can do a bunch with AI, I can likely qualify for a bunch of credits from prior learning. seems like the media voice isn't matching reality in many places.

In response to slide #2: The 1966 & 1986 Math Teacher Protests: Historically, elementary school math teachers (most notably a highly publicized movement of educators in Washington, D.C. in the late 1980s) took to the streets and petitioned school boards to ban calculators. They argued that skipping the manual labor of calculation short-circuited a student's ability to grasp the "why" and "how" behind math. Does anyone here understand the "why" or "how" behind the math we were taught? Have you actually done a problem by hand using pen and paper since you left school? Now I want you to think about what life will be like for young people when they're our age. They will always have access to AI at their fingertips. This whole hazing, "I paid my dues", "I had to learn it the long slow way so should you" attitude is completely wrong. All the while they express concern over AI replacing jobs, they are actively discouraging young people from becoming competent in its use. Totally backward. I love this quote: "There are two types of people in the future. The one's who learned how to use AI, and the unemployed. "
