Now retired, Phenix testified in the criminal trial of the suspect's father today (Tuesday, February 17) about the shooting and his recovery. He taught special education in the Barrow County School System for 25 years and was at Apalachee for two years, where he also coached the golf team. He was teaching a geometry class with teacher Valerie Lancaster when he was shot in one of his hips and feet. Lancaster used dry erasers to try to stop the bleeding, and Phenix underwent surgery before returning to work in December with about 85% functionality. He testified today (Tuesday, February 17) he realized he’d been shot when he got back into his classroom and "that's when something didn't feel right." "I kind of felt some sort of pain in my hip, and kind of got into the classroom, stumbled in ... I think I either hit the floor, hit the floor, hit the wall," Phenix testified. He realized in the hospital "that my glasses were broken and out of black eye, so I'm assuming I hit my head somewhere along the way." "But yeah, I got back into the classroom, and we were able to get the door shut, and then I kind of hit the floor or I guess I kind of hit a wall, maybe slid down a little bit," Phenix testified. He said was "shot in the in the hip and in the foot, of all things." "And I don't know how that really happened. It might have been a ricochet," he said. Background: A gunman killed two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on September 4, 2024. Eight students and one teacher were injured. The victims were Mason Schermerhorn, 14; Christian Angulo, 14; Richard Aspinwall, 39 and a math teacher and defensive coordinator for the school's football team; and Cristina Irimie, 53 and a math teacher. Colin Gray's oldest son, Colt Gray, is awaiting trial on 55 charges, including counts of murder and aggravated assault. The father is currently on trial for 29 charges, including involuntary manslaughter, second-degree murder, cruelty to children and reckless conduct. Prosecutors say he gave his son the rifle used in the shooting as a Christmas gift, despite law enforcement telling him to keep guns away from his son. You can watch some of the opening statements here @Meghann Cuniff and here @Meghann Cuniff. The jury was selected from Hall County instead of Barrow County because of extensive pretrial publicity in Barrow County. The trial is being held at the Barrow County Courthouse in Winder. Nicholas Primm, the chief judge in Georgia's Piedmont Judicial Circuit, is presiding. #law #crime #school #teacher #court
