because Australia has a lot of tax minimisation loopholes that sadly hurt the working class. the govt foregoes so much tax revenue through these loopholes that has to then be recouped from making everyone else's taxes higher. so working class people who are already not rich enough to acquire wealth creating assets now really get screwed on income tax and are basically stuck because they can't afford to take financial risks like leaving their job to start a business etc because they have a mortgage that needs to get paid and kids that need to a stable home. so when they see a successful person they assume they are using whatever mechanism is available to them to screw over a working class person. this country spends too much money, and therefore it taxes too high, so our middle class is perpetually stuck in serfdom. it's actually tragic if you think about it

Yeah Australia has a massive tall poppy syndrome. You’re not allowed to be doing better than everyone else and it sucks. You shouldn’t have to minimise your wins. And I say that as someone who is on a really minimum income right now, no savings, a car worth $6k and is renting; my situation is my situation, and anyone else in a different situation has done so from their individual life choices, and if should be applauded.

I had no idea how bad tall poppy syndrome was here when I moved here 10 years ago! Australia is home but I 💯 agree with the sentiment, starting a business and being successful isn’t celebrated or promoted. You’re put in survival/ compliance mode!

Brother I’m in the same boat as you are, when I first bought my self a home at 25 I first exclusively told the good news to my parents and sibling first, after that they hated me for it, and started seen me less and less, I ended up alone in life, let alone the rest of society. Your own family is your enemy these days. Motto is don’t tell your plans to anyone, keep saying you don’t own anything and it’s on a loan, my mistake for been honest.

Why does it bother you what others think? Firstly, not all wins need to be broadcast, & expecting others to celebrate your wins will always lead to disappointment. Enjoy what you have, you don't need to know what others think. I dont care what people own, buy etc & I live comfortably in my own existence. Once you stop worrying what others think, stop thinking believing that material things matter to everyone, you’ll be happier.
