People wake up on it, work on it, raise their kids on it. Children as young as five spend their days sorting garbage by hand instead of sitting in a classroom, and a full day of it earns about two dollars. The land underneath all of it used to be rice fields. Here's what most people miss when they see footage like this. The people living here aren't lazy or broken. They built an entire recycling economy out of what the rest of the city threw away. They're resourceful, they're working harder than most of us ever will, and they're doing it with almost nothing. What they're missing isn't effort. It's a way out. A real chance to earn somewhere other than a landfill, to put a kid in school instead of on the pile. That chance has never reached them, and it's the whole reason a place like this can exist in the first place. We think that's the thing actually worth fixing.
