@techserks: If you keep pasting the same instructions into Claude, Skills fix that. Here's the plain-English version What a Skill is: A Skill is just a folder with a SKILL.md file. You write the instructions once, and Claude adds them to its toolkit. It loads automatically when your request matches — or you run /skill-name. It's not a separate app or tool; it's injected instructions, and it can bundle scripts, templates and examples. How they work: Claude reads each skill's description to decide when to use it. The body only loads when needed, so it's nearly free until then. Once loaded, it guides Claude's steps inside your normal chat — and skills can even combine on one task. A SKILL.md is two parts: --- name: summarise-changes description: Summarise uncommitted changes and flag risks. Use when asked what changed. --- ## Instructions Summarise the diff in 2-3 bullets, then list any risks. (The description is the most important line — it's how Claude knows when to reach for it.) Create one in 3 steps: 1. Make a folder: ~/.claude/skills/my-skill/ 2. Add SKILL.md — frontmatter (name + description) + instructions 3. Test it — run Claude, ask something that matches, or type /my-skill Where it lives decides who gets it: ~/.claude/skills (all your projects) or .claude/skills in a repo (this project, shareable with the team). Skills vs MCP — not the same thing: Skills teach Claude HOW to do something; MCP connects it to your tools and data. Different jobs, and they pair well. Save this and turn your most-repeated task into a skill. What would yours be? 👇 Want your repeat workflows turned into proper skills? That's what we do.
